The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) offers higher education and research and development (R&D) activities within technical subjects, arts and design. The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.

The Department of Computer Science offers three bachelor’s degree programmes, a master’s degree programme, and is part of a cross-departmental PhD program. Academic staff at the department are pursuing research in a wide range of areas including computer science, the natural sciences, and innovation and management. Both students and researchers are also involved in an increasing number of interdisciplinary initiatives across the university.

The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design at OsloMet is hiring one Researcher (100%), shared between the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mechanical, Electronics and Chemical Engineering. The appointment is for a term of 1 year, with expected start date on July 1st, 2018.

Area of research

The Department of Computer Science (CS) and the Department of Mechanical, Electronics, and Chemical Engineering (MEK) at OsloMet have identified a collaboration area within Machine Learning applied to Computer Vision. The researcher will join two research groups in “Applied Artificial Intelligence” (CS) and “Automation, Robotics, and Intelligent Systems” (MEK) and will work at the intersection of a highly multidisciplinary and stimulating research environment and laboratories (Assisted Living Technology Lab, Automation and Robotics Lab, Living Technology Lab).

The researcher is expected to apply machine learning, and in particular deep learning, to solve problems that require computer vision. The main purpose of this position is to strengthen and expand our research activities within Computer Vision - develop further existing tools for image processing, contribute to current projects, as well as initiate new projects and activities within this thematic area. Existing research projects include activity recognition indoors, autonomous navigation of robot swarms and drones, universally designed assistive technologies. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to contribute towards applications for external funding, both at national and international level, as well as facilitate network building.    

This position is supported by two strategic Lighthouse research projects in the Faculty: “Autonomic Systems” and “Complex, Adaptive, and Self-Organising Systems”.

Qualification

  • The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree within Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • We require documented research in one or more of the following topics; machine learning, artificial intelligence, complex systems, autonomous systems.
  • The work requires good programming skills.
  • We also require excellent written and oral communication skills in English. For candidates who are neither native English speakers nor from Scandinavia, the following tests can be used as documentation for English skills: TOEFL, Academic IELTS and Cambridge CAE or CPE.

Minimum scores are:

TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)

IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Desired Skills

The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • Strong expertise within Image processing/ Computer Vision.
  • Experience with artificial neural networks and deep learning.
  • Experience with autonomous and bio-inspired systems will be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated research capability relevant to the position and a strong publication record.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire knowledge in new topics.
  • Experience with supervision/guidance of students.

Salary is set in accordance with the Norwegian State Salary Scale, position code 1109 Forsker NOK 517 300-649 800. By law 2% of the salary is deducted as to the Norwegian State Pension Fund.
