Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with 23,000 students and over 2,600 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. OsloMet educates students and conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of the Norwegian welfare state and the metropolitan region.
We hereby invite for top-class researchers of any nationality (at any stage in their career) in the study of Digital human: artificial intelligence enhanced human bodies and the representation of the self to apply for a EU-funded Marie Sklodowska Curie Action Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF) to conduct research at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University for a period of 1-2 years.
Research group for Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) at the Department of Computer Science, in close collaboration with the research group Art is Society at the Department of Art, Design and Drama. This work will be carried out at the Living Technology Lab, hosted by the OsloMet Artificial Intelligence Lab and will contribute to the FELT project - Futures of Living Technologies.
There is enormous interest in this renewed convergence of Art and IT around the globe, with new institutions founded, public initiatives functioning increasingly professionally, a plethora of projects, events, and a considerable number of publications. The picture is one of a booming field. The adoption of novel technologies is radically changing our society, the way we live and work. In particular, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has grown at an impressive rate in the last decade, being able to solve tasks at human and superhuman level. However, people's lives are shaped and influenced by a technological race and very fast advancements without the time to understand their implications, effects, and the future in general. This poses crucial societal challenges and communal consequences that require transversal and interdisciplinary Research.
This project will carry out research at the intersection of art, artificial life, artificial intelligence, robotics and 3d-printing. The goal of the project is to investigate a transhumanistic future where the concept of self changes due to human-body enhancements that develop new senses and perceptions through robotics, artificial intelligence and 3d-printing, i.e. a new form of artificial life. The symbiotic integration of human and artificial intelligence, soft tissues/living matter and machines, requires approaches and methods at the boundary of art and technology research. The candidate will explore the use of some technologies to enhance the human body (including robotics, artificial intelligence, 3d-printing, neural interfaces, wearables and bio-sensors) to explore issues related to the representation of the self and the interrelations and intersections that occur between machines and the human being. We invite applicants to propose more detailed topics within the scope of this research as a part of their application.
We encourage applicants with background in technology/engineering and interest in the arts and applicants with background in the arts with interest in technology. Successful candidates will be supervised by Associate Prof. Stefano Nichele will be working as team member of the OsloMet research group of the Department of Information Technology.
Important information about lab descriptions and project descriptions HERE.
With this call for Expression of Interest, we invite researchers to submit their resumé in ERC format (including publication list) and a short project description, that will be the basis for selecting a maximum of three candidates with which we will collaborate in developing competitive MSCA-IF proposals. In this first phase, the cooperation will be carried out remotely, but with regular email and Skype communication, and one physical meeting, if convenient. If applicants are successful, the place of work will be at the main campus in the center of Oslo.
The EU informs the results on the MSCA-IF applications in January/February 2020. Successful candidate(s) are expected to be available to start within the following 2 months. The candidates must be assessed as in principle eligible for a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship.
Main duties of the position
The successful candidate will primarily work on the Marie Curie funded project, but will be integrated at the research group and the department in general, by taking part in regular meetings and discussion groups, but will specifically be introduced with Stefano Nichele national and international network. If agreed with the candidate, he/she may also be included in other ongoing projects or in proposal processes.
