Faculty of Social Sciences offers study programmes within archivistics, library and information science, journalism and media studies, social work, social policy and child welfare, public management and business.

The faculty has about 4200 students and nearly 280 members of staff.

The Department has around 600 students and 40 employees and is located at the OsloMet Pilestredet Campus in Oslo. Multiple programs are offered through the department, including Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs in Library and Information Science and a Bachelor’s program in Archivistics and Records Management.

About the position

The Department of Archivistics, Library and Information Science currently has available one PhD Fellow position affiliated with the PhD program in Library and Information Science, which currently has around 20 research fellows.

Profile

In line with global, technological and material trends, fiction and non-fiction landscapes are changing radically in regard to the production and publishing, as well as the distribution and dissemination of texts. As a result, genres and reading patterns are changing, which in turn changes how and in what ways literature is discussed. Increasingly, literary discussions are taking place in digital public spheres. These developments have led to a great need for research-based knowledge in these areas. For the advertised position, projects focusing on the implications that these changes have for libraries are particularly relevant.

The PhD research position is linked to the subject of sociology of literature and the research group Mediation of Culture and Literature (LITKULT). Applicants must prepare a PhD project proposal. Relevant topics could be:

  • Reading and media habits in Norway, such as children's use of digital literature or contemporary social reading and dissemination practices.
  • Changes in media materiality, availability and use, including consequences for libraries.
  • The relationship between digital and traditional mediation services for literature.

The duration of the PhD fellowship is three years.

Qualifications and requirements

Required qualifications:

  • Education at Master's degree level in a relevant field
  • Ability to communicate well in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and be goal oriented
  • Passion for the subject area

Desired background:

  • Relevant research experience
  • Experience in publishing academic works and participation in international seminars/conferences

Conditions:

  • The PhD position requires admission to the PhD Programme
  • A final plan for the PhD scholarship shall be approved and made contractual no later than 3 months after commencement of the fellowship.

When assessing applicants, the project description and the project’s relevance to the PhD program’s research area will be emphasized. The proposal must indicate that the project will realistically lead to a doctoral degree within the three-year period.

The proposal should consist of a maximum of 10 pages and include the following elements:

  • Research questions, theory and method
  • Relevant knowledge within the research area
  • Schedule for the educational and research plan

The salary is set in accordance with the Norwegian State Salary Scale, job code 1017, wage level 50 (NOK 436 900).
