The Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) has approximately 550 employees and 7000 students and is located in Oslo and Akershus. The Faculty is comprised of four departments as well as the National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAFO). The Faculty educates tomorrow’s teachers from kindergarten through upper secondary school, in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Faculty offers a PhD in Education. In addition, the Faculty offers development studies and studies in sign language and interpreting. Diversity is a core value for the Faculty and its activities. The Faculty’s research and development focuses on practical training and is both profession-oriented and internationally oriented.

The Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education (GFU) has strong research communities within the field of school subjects, educational science, and digital competence, and educates teachers for the Norwegian school system in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Department offers studies on bachelor and master level, and contributes to the general development of skills for school employees through continuing and further education.

The Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education, GFU, is advertising a permanent position as professor in the didactics of social science, tentatively starting on the first of January, 2019.

Main tasks and responsibilities

The successful applicant will teach, supervise and follow up students placement periods at the bachelor and master’s levels, with possible teaching in the Faculty’s Ph. D. programme, Educational Sciences for Teacher Training. The two Primary- and Lower Secondary Teacher Education’s and the master’s program in School Oriented Educational Science is organised such that students specialise in a school related subject, and the successful applicant will be part of the team of employers connected to the major in social science. Furthermore, the successful applicant will also be expected to lead a research group, to inspire research and development in the department and to initiate new projects. Applying for external funding, is a part of the position, as are administrative tasks.

We are looking for applicants who have:

  • Professor-level qualifications in social science education with a specialisation in one of the following fields: geography, social science or history
  • Insight into and knowledge about teacher education within the social sciences
  • Knowledge about primary and lower secondary education and teacher education

Educational qualifications:

Documented pedagogical competence and experience is desirable. Candidates who have no relevant qualifications in pedagogy at the time of appointment must commit themselves to complete the program for basic pedagogical competence (15 ECTS credits) at OsloMet within two years.

The university will evaluate pedagogical skills in connection with an interview for the position.

The general criteria for appointment in a position as professor are stipulated in Regulations relating to Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions (Forskrift om ansettelse og opprykk i undervisnings- og forskerstillinger), § 1-2.

Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution. Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance by NOKUT, and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed.
  • A list of scholarly works, including publication details
  • Up to 10 academic documents with a table of contents

Other information

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, job title Professor and positon code 1013/1532. Salary NOK 686 900-882 900 annually. A higher salary might be considered for particularly well qualified applicants. Law deducts 2 % of the salary to the Norwegian State Pension Fund.
